Always give them more time whenever you ask them a question. Avoid reshaping the questions but repeat it when the person asks you to. The person may stay quiet for some time to clearly think the question through before answering. This does not indicate that they did not comprehend the question. You, therefore, need to consider this while analyzing their performance.

Allow them some extra time to settle in and to complete the training. Pair them up with a friend at work to assist them to navigate easily during the first few weeks of work.
