Picking The Best Teeth Whitening Treatments

By Jeramy Roten

Teeth will inevitably become discolored if they are consistently exposed to various substances, such as coffee, tea, cigarettes, and certain foods. This occurs when the pigments from the aforementioned sources become lodged in the enamel of each tooth. There are certain products available to remove such stains and these are generally referred to as teeth whitening products, although this is an umbrella term under which many whitening methods fall.

Many whitening formulas contain a solution called carbamide peroxide. The latter has been tested and is regarded as safe and effective for use on discolored or stained tooth enamel. In addition, it has an exceptionally stable shelf life. The effectiveness of such formulas is a result of the manner through which they release the peroxide they contain, which subsequently breaks down into a type of free radical agent, which in turn dissolves the particles responsible for the discoloration.

Hydrogen peroxide is also an ingredient that is frequently seen in numerous do it yourself tooth whitening kits. The main difference between hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide is how quickly the desired results are achieved when the products are used. Hydrogen peroxide typically works faster than carbamide peroxide and other bleaching agents. This makes hydrogen peroxide perfect for quick treatments. However, most experts report that carbamide peroxide is the better choice for those who prefer overnight treatments.

Regarding effectiveness, evidence produced in clinical trials has led to conflicting opinions. For example, some studies suggested that both peroxides are equally as effective. However, other trials indicated that products containing carbamide offer more optimum results.

Certain experts believe that this discrepancy has to do with each product's concentration: it is very possible that the effectiveness of various products has more to do with the formula's potency than its specific ingredients. In addition, the format in which they are processed may also affect the results achieved with each product, such as pastes versus gels.

Such products can be purchased and traditional stores or online. High-potency whiteners are also available. However, one must first schedule an appointment with a dentist or cosmetic professional in order to obtain such a prescription.

It is always one's best interest to seek the advice of a dentist before using the aforementioned teeth whitening products. This is because all cosmetic products of this type are associated with certain risks. Although these are mild, it is still a good idea to speak to a professional before making a final decision about which products are best.
