What Psychological Testing Child Custody Does For Children

By Carolyn Walker

Children who don't receive the best attention during the time of a divorce or the separation of their parents, will usually battle with a lot of other emotions later in their adult lives. This is why one must find the best psychological testing child custody experts. There are plenty of these people around, but you have to shop around.

This is where a professional child psychologist is needed who has the right type of qualifications and experience to deal with the scenario. It can obviously be very emotional for a young child and one needs to find a therapist who they can connect with and who understands them. The attorney can help with this. There will often be different circumstances and something more serious which can cause a lot more trauma.

Sometimes a court case will be about sexual abuse and the trauma that the child has suffered over the last couple of years. The father may be responsible for this and this is why the parents are getting divorced. This type of exposure can hurt the child. It is something that can affect them in years to come and this is why they need a psychologist who is especially trained for trauma.

A deep connection really has to be formed between the psychologist and the young one. This is important because a lot of children are not that expressive. However, a psychologist that specializes in cases like these will know how to be patient and they will know how to move forward. There are various techniques that they can use, depending on the circumstances.

There are also different methods that these therapists use, which is obviously important depending on the personality of the child. They may be more introverted, and in a case like this they may even be referred to a play therapist, for example. Here, they will learn to be more creative. The play therapist will be able to tell what is going on in the mind of someone like this.

There are many reasons why kids needs to be removed from the home or why the parents and stepparents need to be evaluated. It can become quite complex. The evaluator will need to look at different aspects and put them altogether. They will need to interview everyone and schedule interviews at different times, analyzing a number of different aspects.

Older children will need to do a test and this can tell the therapist, neurologically for example what is going on. They may not want to reveal anything, so they will be tested in the form of shapes and lines and this can tell the neuropsychologist more about their family life.

A lot of the drama may happen after a parent remarries. Another parent may accuse the stepparent or a boyfriend or girlfriend of something after evaluating their young one. However, this is not always true. This is where a professional child custody evaluation needs to be completed. They will interview everyone concerned. This will happen over some time for it to be a success because everyone needs to be given a fair trial.
