First Aid Supplies Everyone Should Purchase

By Eric Holm

Accidents happen every day and being prepared for the unexpected can mean the difference between a positive outcome and a total disaster. People have no control over when or where an accident may occur but with some advance planning it is possible to survive almost any emergency situation. Something that everyone should do is gather the necessary first aid supplies and store them in a convenient location

Acquiring a first aid kit with a few extra supplies does not cost a fortune. You can easily spend a minimal amount of money in buying something which is highly necessary to evade any minor or major casualty in your life. Although no first aid kit can have supplies to handle all major medical troubles that occurs suddenly; a properly accumulated first aid kit can handle all emergency situations, or enable the victim to survive till expert medicare arrives.

What are the basic contents of an ideal first aid kit is a matter of choice. The content selection should always depend on the possible severity of a situation and the type of injury. It also depends on when and where the supplies are to be used. Like putting together a basic first aid kit for travel purpose differs from the one to be used at home. Outdoor and indoor first aid kits with all emergency preparedness supplies are readily available in market. Below is a simple list of first aid supplies required in every first aid kit.

Sterile pads, assorted bandages, tweezers, surgical tape and sharp scissors are items in a first aid kit that come in handy for every emergency, small and large. Small packages of insect repellent and SPF 30 or higher sunscreen will offer protection against bug bites and sunburn if you become stranded outside for an extended period of time. Include aspirin or some other pain reliever but remember to check the expiration date periodically and replace them when necessary. Rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer and hydrogen peroxide are additional items that will come in handy to clean out a wound and reduce the risk of infection. Some kits will even include a basic suture kit and a mouth guard for use while administering CPR to a victim. This first aid list includes everything needed to treat a wide range of injuries. Scrapes and small cuts can be easily treated with little more than some antibiotic cream and a clean bandage. More sophisticated kits will have other types of equipment needed for a more severe trauma. Someone having a heart attack may be treated with a defibrillator machine. This device can save a life, especially if an accident occurs in a location that is far removed from any emergency services. Someone who has passed out may be revived by waving smelling salts underneath the nose. Additional items like burn ointment, a thermometer, eyewash solution and cold packs can be added to any disaster kit.

First aid kits should be easily accessible at all times and fully stocked with everything needed to handle an emergency situation. Having the proper supplies on hand will help you take control and ensure a positive outcome, regardless of the nature of the emergency you are faced with. Assembling an emergency kit will give you peace of mind knowing that you are prepared for the worst.
