A Brief Review Of Stem Cell Treatment Centers

By Jason Scott

While most applications, surgeries and treatments take place in a hospital setting, there are also centers dedicated to treating different forms of cancer and other conditions. As such, a number of doctors, biologists, bio-engineers and scientists are now researching regenerative medicine in stem cell treatment centers.

When it comes to stem cell therapy also known as regenerative medicine, doctors are studying how the cells can renew, reprogram, repair or replace those displaying signs of disease. For, these cells have the ability to develop and grow in different areas of the body. As such, the cells are diseased, the disease can often spread rather rapidly.

There are two types of stem cells which have this ability, genetically modified adult cells which have been reprogrammed in a lab, and those from embryos. When it comes to those from embryos, there is still a great deal of controversy as to whether such practice is ethical. While this is the case, most of the controversy comes from far right religious extremists and the question as to whether life starts at conception or birth.

Researchers are now studying the ability of these reprogrammed cells to be modified into specialized cells which can regenerate and repair cells in the nerves, blood, heart and other parts of the body. In doing so, it has been discovered that the cells can potentially heal and treat a number of conditions.

While some research is being done with regards to the cause of various conditions, others are looking into and testing different medicine and treatments. In fact, the regenerative medicine staff at the Mayo Clinic are at the forefront when it comes to this type of research. Whereas, a number of individuals having gone through such trials have seen major progress in eliminating diseased cells, or preventing the spread of disease to other areas.

Researchers have already discovered that stem cells can help individuals suffering from a number of neurological conditions such as Parkinson's as well as joint issues which effect different areas of the body. As such, stem cell treatment is now considered a realist goal among doctors, researchers, scientists and others.

A great deal of research still needs to be completed for while the therapy has often proved beneficial during research, the trials have also shown unpredictable results. As a result, the success in using these cells in different therapies often relies on funding, regulatory guidelines and future trials. In addition, the Mayo Clinic also has to maintain the safety of patients while conducting trials in this area.

Currently, the Mayo Clinic can provide transplants known as bone marrow transplants of these cells to some qualifying individuals. For example, individuals whom have had lymphoma, leukemia or other conditions normally treated with chemotherapy often qualify for this therapy. Individuals interested in such treatment can consult with the Mayo Clinic consultation service related to regenerative medicine to determine eligibility factors, cost and other associated information.

The Mayo Clinic has set up a special consultation service related to issues, questions and answers surrounding this type of treatment. In addition, the regenerative medical staff can answer questions about side effects and other concerns from doctors, scientists, researchers and volunteers. Whereas, the staff can also provide direction on the potential use of stem cell therapies in relation to major organs.
