By Amanda Allen

The word of perfumes and colognes is huge. There are all numerous brands available and each product will have a distinctive scent. Choosing the perfect cologne to wear is therefore not as simple as may assume. Scents differ as day and night and while some make a statement of good fashion taste, others can enhance your sexual appeal. Then again, there are scents that lift moods and others evoke fond memories. If you are shopping for cologne for men and women, there are some basic tricks you should have up your sleeve.

It is vital for you to get well acquainted with different product brands before you make an investment. Consider not just your personality, but also your financial means and objectives before you choose what to buy. The tricky part will be finding an excellent scent that you would enjoy wearing.

Colognes consist of different notes. It is these notes that determine the ultimate scent of a product. Then again, notes have three layers, namely the base, middle and top notes. They work in harmony to produce a particular scent. For instance, floral perfumes contain various scent notes such as rose or lavender. Others have fruity scents and may have apple or even citrus undertones. You can also find exotic fragrances that have spicy notes like cinnamon or even star anise.

Musk scents are heavier and they contain a tone that is more masculine. They are therefore mainly preferred by men. Whether you want fragrance for women, men or unisex products, the importance of understanding the notes should not be underestimated. Keep in mind that it is the base notes that linger around for longer.

Understanding matters that touch on concentration levels is also important. There are four levels of concentration where products that are more concentrated will cost more. If you decide to spend a fortune, the good news is that you are guaranteed of enjoying great value for every coin you spend.

Products with the highest concentration levels are named parfum or perfume. The scent they produce can last for a whole 24hours. The other level products are called eau de parfum and their scent can last for no more than six hours. From this point, there are the eau de toilette products which are fairly affordable and available in most retail stores. Finally, products with the lowest fragrance concentration levels are referred to as eau de cologne. Their scents linger for about 2 hours.

It is vital to test a product before purchasing it. This is regardless of the scent or even the concentration levels that you choose. Start by doing a sniff test and decide whether the cologne is something you would enjoy wearing. If it is, spray a small bit of the product on your wrist. Wait for several minutes and sniff it again.

Shopping online can be tricky. This is because you will not have the benefit of using testers to find out precisely what you want. In this case, you may want to know your preferred scents before spending money. Alternatively, ensure that you are good at understanding descriptions.
