Applied behavioral analysis (ABA) is the leading scientific method that helps patients with Autism to overcome their condition. In order to improve their condition, ABA specialists focus on a system of reward, which encourages positive actions like speech, social activity and life skill improvements. Students with autism are typically highly capable and can often learn as well as their peers, but different teaching methods are needed to help in the process. ABA is an excellent technique that has shown success rates for decades.

Today's models rely on praise for advancements and setbacks are approached with attention and care. Applied Verbal Behavior (VB) is a recent development within applied behavioral science. As the name implies, it focuses mainly of speech reinforcement, but some other skills are involved as well. This branch of behavioral science bases its efforts on the work of Dr. F. Skinner, who devised a division of speech in 1957. According to Dr. F. Skinner, there are several forms of verbal behavior - mands (requests), echoes (verbal imitations), tacts (labels) and intraverbals (conversational responses). Each of these forms has a specific nature, and VB tries to convey this to autistic children.

Rewarding techniques based on social and tangible reinforcement compliment the daily values of an ABA program. These practices are not bribes of food and toys, but rather encouragement and support. In accordance with the Code of Ethics of the (BACB), rewards of a harmful nature in the long term are never in the best interests of a participant.

The simple fact is that Applied Behavior Analysis is proven to help reduce the symptoms of autism, and in many cases it can do so in a significant way. All children deserve the best chance possible, and for kids with autism, ABA is that chance. With proper training, especially at an early age, kids with autism have an excellent chance at a near complete recovery. For many, the reduction in symptoms is enough for them to go on to lead a life that is incredibly similar to their peers, including relationships, friendships, and successful careers.

In conclusion, Friends and family of those with autism are suggested to stay close to their ABA principles and apply the teachings to classrooms and homes for a more consistent environment.
