When Benefiting From Home Health Care Indianapolis Patients Can Live In The Comfort Of Their Houses

By Jessica Rodriguez

People live much longer than before but many older people struggle to perform all the day to day tasks that they used to complete with ease. Many find that they cannot cope with at least some help. Many other people also need help after sustaining injuries or when suffering the symptoms of a dread disease. By offering professional home health care Indianapolis caregivers help many patients to live in the comfortable surroundings that they are used to.

Most people never even consider the possibility that they may end up in circumstances where they would not be able to live their lives without at least some form of assistance. If they do think about it, many automatically assume that their families will take on the task of caring for them. However, the level of care required may be beyond the skills or resources of the family.

The statistics are frightening. Eighty per cent of people over the age of sixty will require some form of assistance, ranging from occasional help to full time nursing. Even bigger numbers of younger people will sustain injuries or contract dread diseases that will render them incompetent to live without assistance. Sadly, most medical insurance policies do not cover the cost of such assistance and those that do only cover the cost for a limited period.

Luckily, it is possible to purchase special insurance that specifically make provision for the cost of hiring a permanent caregiver. This type of insurance is affordable, especially if it is purchased at a young age. Anyone baulking at the cost of such insurance policies should contemplate the consequences of being forced to live in an institution. Live offers no warranties and it is only sensible to plan for the eventuality of needing the services of a caregiver.

There are various types of assistance that may be required. Some patients only need help with mundane matters such as cooking, dressing and bathing. Others need medical care, such as the changing of bandages or the administration of medication. Some patients need only part time help but many others need full time, preferably live in assistance. Where a very high level of assistance is needed institutionalization is sometimes the only option.

Experts agree that it is best for the patient if he is able to stay in the familiar surroundings of his home. It is very important to prepare the patient for the fact that a caregiver will be sharing the house with him. Many patients are resentful and even ashamed about the fact that they need assistance. In some cases it may be beneficial to motivate the patient to volunteer for counselling.

Hiring a caregiver should be undertaken with great care and patience. The patient should be part of the selection process and it would be beneficial if the chosen caregiver can relate to the patient by shared interests, for example. The caregiver should understand his responsibilities and it is normally best to select a professional that has worked with patients under similar circumstances.

It is not easy to suddenly find oneself in a situation where it is impossible to cope with day to day living without assistance. Receiving such assistance in the comfort of the home is, however, infinitely preferable to being forced to live in an institution. Institutions are regimented and patients cannot make decisions regarding their own routine and preferences
