Information On Sickle Cell Anemia Prevention

By Imelda Reid

Sickle-cell anemia is a disorder characterized by the assumption of a rigid sickle shape by the red blood cells. This disease is hereditary and therefore there are no sickle cell anemia prevention methods that have been developed yet. People with this disease do not however have to die young because there are many precautions that can be taken to manage the illness.

Because of the nature of this disease, the patients usually have a high risk of oxygen loss and dehydration. They are therefore required to take a lot of fluids in their diet. The people with this disease are also supposed to have adequate rest as their bodies do not have the capacity to handle too much fatigue. Regular examinations are also very important to detect if they have any complications that may lead to their death.

Intense exercises must always be averted by individuals who suffer from the sickness. Physical activities increase the need of oxygen. This is attributable to the less volume of oxygen transported in their blood. In case they need to have a workout routine, they must first refer to the opinion of their physician to know if it is possible.

They should always avoid smoking or being exposed to passive smoking. The impure air can lead to some very serious chest syndromes. It is also important that they avoid high altitudes as much as possible. If it is mandatory to travel on air, they must make sure that the airline has oxygen tanks provided.

Although one can never prevent sickle cell, they can always avoid getting the infections associated with the disease. They can start by getting vaccinated against all the common diseases such as hepatitis, influenza and tuberculosis among others. In addition to the vaccines, they can also be given preventive antibiotics to prevent them from getting infections.

People with this illness must make sure that they always eat a balanced diet. Food supplements can also be used to complement to foods they take. Iron is an important component of their diet therefore must always be available in the diet. Over consumption of iron is however dangerous because they can cause an iron overload which is not good for the body.

This disease is associated with a lot of emotional and social impact. Many children and adults who suffer from this illness usually have a lot of emotional distress that lead to them being isolated from others. Most children with sickle-cell have been proven to have low grades at school. This is because they miss a lot of classes in a year due to their medical conditions.

In spite of the way the families feel when they see their loved ones going through so much pain, they are supposed to stay strong so that they show support to the victims. The victims should be treated as normally as possible so that they do not feel like they are a dying course. With all the above precautions observed, it will be possible to have longer lives for the sickle-cell victims.
