Cons Of Surgical Procedures For POP And SUI Treatment

By Albert Ramirez

Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Women especially during their menopausal stages are at risks of experiencing a medical condition called pelvic organ prolapse (POP). This medical condition occurs when the pelvic organ drops from its normal spot in the lower belly and pushes against the walls of the vagina. And this happens when the muscles that hold the pelvic organs in place weakened or stretched from childbirth or surgery.

Indications of POP

When the following symptoms are experienced by a woman, she may have developed POP:

A feeling of pressure from pelvic organs pressing against the vaginal wall

Sufferers may have a feeling of fullness particularly in the lower abdomen

When the affected organ protrudes, there may be a sensation that this organ is slipping out

Feeling a pull or stretch in the groin area or pain in the lower back

There may also be urinary problems such as frequent urination

Women report that they experience great pain during sexual contact

And having problems with bowels such as constipation

Pelvic Organ Prolapse Treatment

Management of POP may include the more invasive surgical procedures. A big number of women with POP have been reported to have availed of surgical options in treating their disorders. Among the several choices available, the use of pelvic mesh has become very popular.

Surgical mesh is a medical device used to provide additional support when repairing weakened or damaged tissue. Surgical mesh devices can be made from man-made (synthetic) materials or animal tissue. This is also used for urogynecologic procedures, including repair of POP and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). It is implanted permanently to reinforce the weakened vaginal wall for POP repair or for supporting the urethra or bladder neck for SUI repair.

Gaining wide acceptance at present is the use of sling procedures to repair SUI. In this approach, a surgeon uses a tissue of the woman or surgical mesh to apply around the bladder neck and urethra, the organ where urine passes through. With this reinforcement, the urethra functions properly even when abdominal pressure is exerted such laughing, coughing, or jumping.

Complications of POP Repairs

However adverse reports were forwarded to the Food and Drug Administration from 2008 to 2010 pertaining to surgical mesh devices where mesh tends to erode through the vagina. Other complications include pain, infection, bleeding, and pain during intercourse, organ perforation and urinary problems. It has been found that many of these complications require medical or surgical treatment and hospitalization.

The serious injuries sustained by these women have compelled the FDA to release a public health notification informing of the dangers believed to be caused by vaginal mesh devices. Adverse reports concerning the dangers of using mesh implants continue to be submitted to the FDA. Women who were implanted with these devices and who have suffered serious injuries have filed mesh implant lawsuits against different mesh manufacturers.

Update on Mesh Implant Lawsuits

Cases were already consolidated in West Virginia and several other lawsuits have been filed in state courts. The first of four bellwether trial against mesh manufacturer Bard is set to begin in June, while others are set for the following year.
