Side Effects Of Fake Bake Sunless Tanning Products

By Haywood Hunter

Fake Bake Sunless Tanning also goes by the names UV-free tanning, spray tanning, self tanning, or fake tanning where it is tropically applied. Fake bake sunless tanning refers to the use of chemical commodities on the surface of the body to attain a suntanned glow. Its popularity greatly rose is the 1960s due to the safety it offers compared to other techniques. Techniques like use of tan-beds or sun-beds are known to cause skin disorders like cancer.

Fake bake sunless tanning may be attained through introduction, use, or consumption of various substances. Wearing of artificial sunscreens is one of the key ways. Sunscreens work by limiting the speed and amount of melanin produced in the body system. Sunscreens that have an SPF factor of 8 can inhibit the synthesis of melanin by around 95 percent whilst those of SPF factor of 15 inhibit by more than 98 percent.

Consumption of specified carotenoids antioxidants is another way of achieving a radiant naturally glowing skin. Such carotenoids exist in certain vegetables and fruits like tomatoes, carrots, and water melons. They cause a color change when ingested in large doses. The quality of skin tone they cause is better compared to suntan.

Fake bake sunless tanning pills are also important for sunless color change. The pills contain several ingredients including canthaxanthin and beta carotene. People are discouraged from using fake bake sunless tanning pills following the way in which they work and the effects they produce over a long period of use. Canthaxanthin works by being deposited on internal organs such as kidneys, livers, lungs, and the skin.

Once the canthaxanthin is deposited on the skin, it leads to a color change to some orange-brown coloration. This changes the skin color on the outside as well as on the inside. The major disadvantage is that it is a major cause of lung failure among heavy users over the long run. Beta carotene is the second causative agent of lung cancer after cigarette.

So far, fake bake sunless tanning products named above work from the inside of the body, meaning that they have to be consumed to cause effect. There are other fake bake sunless tanning products that cause effect from the outside. They come in form of lotions, sprays, creams, gels, and body oils. They mainly have dihydroxyacetone as the active ingredient. Dihydroxyacetone is normally shortened to DHA.

DHA is not a paint, stain, or dye, rather it undergoes a chemical reaction with amino acids in the dead cells on the skin. This reaction is same as Maillard reaction, which causes food to turn to brown during processing and storage. There is no necessity for skin pigmentation and/or exposure to UV rays so as to trigger the process. The key disadvantage is however that tans fade gradually starting from 3 nights as dead skin sloughs off the body.

Other fake bake sunless tanning products that help in fake bake sunless tanning use the amino acid tyrosine. Tyrosine-based products work by stimulating increased production of melanin on the skin. This increase in turn accelerates the rate of tanning. They may need UV exposure to enhance the tan. Currently, there are no scientific data that support this claim. Fake bake sunless tanning lotions can be purchased from drug stores.
