A Simple Guide To Sunless Tanning

By Haywood Hunter

You've heard it many times that exposure to the sun can cause deadly skin cancer. Yet despite that, you may be one of those who always wish to get the perfect tan because it makes you look and feel good. Perhaps it's time to consider a healthier option. Why not try sunless tanning? This method of getting a tan has been quite popular even more so now that people are more aware of the dangers of too much exposure to the sun.

Most men and women who choose sunless tanning methods love the fact that they can do achieve a good tan even by applying the products themselves. They can do this any time of the day, unlike getting a natural tan, which can only be done when the sun is up. These products can come in the form of lotions, gels, and creams.

These sunless tanning products usually contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which was approved by the FDA for safe use in the early 70s. DHA is a chemical substance that reacts with the outer layer of the skin, giving it a darker shade. It only stays in the top skin layer and does not get into the bloodstream.

Color does not easily wash off, but instead, fades as the dead skin cells get removed in a couple of days. The tan usually stays for about a week or 10 days. You can always re-apply the sunless tanning product to make the shade look more natural.

Before you apply the sunless tanning lotion on your whole body, make sure that it is the right shade for you. Apply a tiny amount on a hidden area of your body to make sure that you are not allergic to the lotion. Wait at least 24 hours to know if the lotion is right for you.

Although there are many of these sunless tanning products in the market now, not all of them are considered safe for use. Remember also that not all sunless tanning products contain UV protection. Thus, you need to be choosy with the products you will use. This is to make sure that you are not exposing your skin to the dangerous UV rays of the sun.

If you decide to apply the tan lotion yourself, prepare at least two days before by exfoliating and shaving your skin well to get rid of dead skin cells. Wear gloves when applying the sunless tanning lotion and use a sponge to even out the product all over your body. Read the instructions on the product box carefully before starting the application .

Spray tanning is also another popular way of getting a tan. This method is also safe for sunless tanning, and it is usually done using a salon bed or booth. People with fair skin who burn quite easily would find that this is the best method for them.

After application, do not take a shower right away. It will take a few hours to let the color set. One other thing to remember about sunless tanning is to choose your products well. Do not go for cheap ones that may be unsafe for use. Instead, go only for the safest and highest quality products to get that perfect tan.
